SANGINETO AND ITS HISTORY
The origins of this hilly town date back to the colonization of Southern Italy by the Greek.
The real settling of this area was the work of a group of inhabitants from Civitas, a city that was destroyed by the Longobards from the county of Beneveto around 680, those who escaped from the massacre took shelter around the castle in search of protection.
The town is sited in Saint Mark’s “Il Milione” in 1324 “in castro Sangineti” n. 5155. The Touring Club reminds us that the centre once belonged to the Sangineto (the name derives from the place – name) then to the Majorana, and the Firrao.
Sangineto certainly derives from the latin word sang(u)inetum 'the place of privets'
